HCP Newsletter - March 2007

Greetings,

We have some exciting updates to share with you.

HCP Co-Director Dr. Sanduk Ruit featured on National Geographic Ultimate Explorer

Co-Director Dr. Sanduk Ruit has been leading an effort to train North Korean eye care providers and establish a quality eye care infrastructure in the country. This effort started in 2004 when the Himalayan Cataract Project supported microsurgery training for two North Korean ophthalmologists at the Tilganga Eye Centre. Following the initial training, Dr. Ruit and his team from Tilganga have led two cataract workshops in North Korea and two subsequent teams from North Korea have trained at Tilganga.

On Dr. Ruit's most recent trip to North Korea, a film crew from National Geographic Ultimate Explorer accompanied him. 'Inside North Korea,' the program on the Tilganga team in North Korea, aired on the National Geographic Channel on Monday, March 5th at 9pm. It will be re-aired on Sunday, March 11th at 5pm; Monday, March 12th at 5pm; and Wednesday, March 14th at 7pm.

In other news, Co-Director Dr. Geoff Tabin recently returned from a visit to Aravind Eye Hospital, Pondicherry, India, where he led a training workshop with corneal specialists.

Thank you for your involvement in our efforts.

Sincerely,

Job Heintz, Emily Newick and Geoff Tabin
The Himalayan Cataract Project Team
