HCP Newsletter - December 2005
It has been a great month for the Himalayan Cataract Project with the
feature story in December's Outside Magazine. If you have not read it
yet, grab a copy or check out the article online.
The Washington Post highlighted the article in their Sunday Travel
section, available online at WashingtonPost.com.
Geoff and Emily have just returned from the Tilganga Eye Centre in
Kathmandu, Nepal where progress on the hospital expansion is being
made each day. Geoff and Dr. Ruit met with Brian Doolan, head of the
Fred Hollows Foundation in Australia, who just committed $225,000 to
Phase II of the Expansion. Our warmest thanks and appreciation!
Also during the visit, there were two remote eye camps. The first was
a four day eye camp in Duhabi where 2,705 patients were screened and
609 cataract surgeries performed. The second was in Ramechap where
the Himalayan Cataract Project supports a primary eye care center
staffed by an ophthalmic assistant trained at Tilganga. One thousand
forty-eight patients were screened and Dr. Tabin and another surgeon
from Tilganga performed 270 cataract surgeries in the two and a half
days of surgery. See the following link for photographs from the eye
camp as well as a short video clip of a happy post-operative patient
dancing.
Finally, as the holidays approach, a number of supporters have decided
to contribute to the Himalayan Cataract Project in the name of a
friend or family member. We can send letters acknowledging the gifts
directly to you or your gift recipient, blank gift cards and/or
information about the Himalayan Cataract Project. If this gift idea
interests you, please contact us for any assistance that you might
need.
May you have a peaceful holiday season and happy New Year.
Sincerely,
Job Heintz, Emily Newick and Geoff Tabin
The Himalayan Cataract Project Team
